To support the mandatory class observation process for DKU faculty’s tenure, reappointment, and promotion reviews, the Peer Evaluation Ad Hoc Committee saw the importance of having a formative version of such a class observation process facilitated by peer faculty members and/or the Center for Teaching and Learning to focus on feedback for improvement.
This formative process, which is highly recommended, allows faculty to select their own peer observers, utilizes the same observation rubric as the one for the mandatory process, and attend a post-observation meeting to receive constructive peer feedback and have an opportunity to brainstorm actionable strategies to address issues. Faculty are strongly encouraged to participate in the formative process early enough to help them prepare for the mandatory class observation. Faculty may also use the observation notes and rubrics generated from the formative process as supplementary evidence of teaching development to support their reviews.
