Learning Innovation Fellowship (LIF)
The Learning Innovation Fellowship (LIF) program is co-facilitated by Duke Learning Innovation and CTL to prepare new faculty for teaching at DKU. Since 2018, we have run six iterations. Within three months, new faculty meet and work with each other at Duke/DKU campus (if condition allows), learn online (via Sakai modules and Zoom live sessions) about DKU’s teaching culture and students, communicate with faculty mentors, and develop syllabi for the course(s) they will be teaching in the following academic year.
Small Group Instructional Feedback (SGIF)
Student Small Group Instructional Feedback (SGIF) is a formative mid-course check-in process (NOT evaluation) requested by individual faculty for gathering information from students on their learning experience. It is designed for faculty to foster dialogues with students via CTL’s facilitation, taking about 15 minutes in your class.
Teaching and Learning at Lunch (T&L at Lunch)
Bi-weekly Teaching and Learning at Lunch (T&L at Lunch) series provides DKU faculty a venue and opportunities to share, collaborate, reflect and develop in teaching practices, and to foster faculty learning community. Facilitated by CTL, lunch discussions are mainly proposed and co-led by faculty.
Faculty Learning Community (FLC)
DKU faculty are dedicated to foster student significant learning and refine teaching based on pedagogical literature. To reinforce the culture of faculty learning community, faculty members in this program will work closely on a teaching and learning topic towards a practical deliverable that can be adapted to their DKU teaching. We usually call for proposals in the beginning of the academic year and provide a small amount of funding to support FLC members.
Student as Partner (SaP) Program
To present student voices to showcase excellence in teaching as well as to empower students to be more active agents in their own learning experiences, we initiated the pilot of Undergraduate Student Partners of Teaching and Learning Initiative in 2019. So far, we have worked with over 10 undergraduate students (see below) as partners, and engaged them in pedagogical dialogues and course development projects.
First-Year Faculty Colloquium
Facilitated by Yitzhak Lewis, Faculty Coordinator for Teaching and Learning, and Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) To Support faculty adapting to the DKU teaching context & environment, Create a faculty cohort around teaching and learning, Scaffold faculty development, Complete requirements for DKU, Certificate in Innovative Curriculum Design and Pedagogy.
Visit a Classroom (VaC)
Visit a Classroom (VaC) aims to stimulate reflection on teaching and learning, NOT evaluation. A group of 3 to 4 faculty participants across disciplines will visit one another’s classrooms to observe teaching techniques and learning interactions. Faculty would expect to learn from each other and reflect on their own teaching. The goal is to create a respectful, reciprocal, and reflective dialogue on teaching and learning among faculty.
